Japan is a top trending destination for Australians and it is not hard to see why. Situated off the east coast of the Asian mainland, Japan is a master of modernity yet is steeped in deep traditions and customs. The densely-populated cities ooze culture, creativity and neon-coloured lights, while the mountains and country side feature ancient temples and rolling mountainous landscapes.
Recently Luxury Gold’s Global Marketing Manager, Helen Adams embarked on her dream honeymoon and got to witness Japan’s unique beauty first had. We asked her about her experience.
My husband and I touched down in Tokyo and we were struck by the scale of the city and how well organised the public transport system is (which is especially impressive given Tokyo’s sizeable population and high volume of transport users!). Tokyo has something for everyone from historic castle grounds, temples, the lively Harajuku neighbourhood and the ‘techie’ district that’s much loved by video ‘gamers’. Japan does hospitality incredibly well and we never wanted for anything, staying in exceptionally comfortable hotels.
I recommend that everyone tries the sushi – while we have it overseas, it tastes even better in its country of origin. Plus, the ramen and sake were my other food and drink highlights. Check out the famous Golden Pavilion in Kyoto as it definitely deserves its ‘must see’ reputation. Plus, be sure to attend a tea ceremony and try on a kimono if you can!
Kyoto, no question. It has a great mix of old and new – the wooden old town is very beautiful, and the vibrant shopping district is just a few blocks away. We saw some of the most incredible temples and pavilions there set in beautiful grounds. We loved walking along the tranquil Philosopher’s Walk that’s just minutes from the bustling city.
Of course, the sushi is a stand out! We also ate incredible beef, ramen and even matcha Kit Kats (we were dubious, but quickly converted!).
Embrace public transport – the bullet train is reliable and clean and offers a wonderful travel experience. Plus, the train and metro systems in the big cities are also very impressive – punctual and well maintained. Talk to the locals as they’re incredibly friendly and we were regularly impressed by the high standard of English. Just soak it all in and aim for a mix of urban and rural places to explore as each has something very different to offer.
