Itinerary

They say all roads lead to Rome – and that is where we'll begin our delightful Italian adventure. After meeting the group, we'll enjoy a delicious dinner at a local restaurant. Stay: The Guardian Hotel (or similar) (D)

After breakfast, our route will whisk us away to awe-inspiring Assisi, the birthplace of St Francis. After getting to know the famous hilltop town a little better on an orientation tour, we'll move on to Perugia – the medieval capital of the Umbria region. Stay: Hotel Fortuna (or similar) (B)

Introducing Siena: a magnificent Gothic city bursting with fabulous architecture. After exploring the UNESCO World Heritage-listed town centre with our Tour Leader, we'll make tracks for tonight's idyllic accommodation: a country villa hotel set amidst the rolling Tuscan countryside. For dinner this evening, we'll come together to indulge in some superb local cuisine. Stay: Villa Pitiana (or similar) (B/D)

Interested in learning a few Italian culinary secrets? You're in luck! Today our friendly hosts will help us to prepare a classic Tuscan lunch. After indulging in our creations, the afternoon will be ours to take in the panoramic countryside views or take a dip in the pool. Stay: Villa Pitiana (or similar) (B/L)

Today we'll turn our attention to Florence: the birthplace of the Renaissance and home of some of the world's most treasured masterpieces. A local guide will bring the city alive as we stroll by the likes of the Duomo and the Ponte Vecchio on a walking tour. Then, as the afternoon turns to dusk, we'll press on to lovely Lucca. Stay: Hotel Alla Corte degli Angeli (or similar) (B)

Prepare to see an Italian icon up close today as we pay a visit to the Campo Dei Miracoli: home to the legendary Leaning Tower of Pisa. There will be plenty of time for photographing this iconic landmark and uncovering the acoustic wonders of the Baptistry of St John before returning to Lucca.

This afternoon, we'll have the chance to explore the cobblestone streets at our own pace. Stay: Hotel Alla Corte degli Angeli (or similar) (B)

It's time to experience the glitz and glamour of the Italian Riviera! Today we'll make stops at romantic Camogli and glittering Portofino before settling along the Ligurian Riviera.

This evening, take some time to wander along the beautiful seafront– taking in the pastel-coloured houses and elegant hotels. Stay: Europa Hotel Design Spa 1877 (or similar) (B)

Rise and shine – this morning we'll venture to the breathtaking UNESCO World Heritage Piedmont region. We'll head out into the rolling hills of Alba to join a truffle hunt with a local farmer and his dog.

Afterwards, we'll continue our journey south to the enchanting Langhe region where we'll enjoy some free time before a sumptuous group dinner. Stay: Hotel Santa Vittoria (or similar) (B/D)

Away from the coast and onwards to Barolo, in Piedmont: a region of rich red wines and luxurious cuisine. There's a treat in store for the bon vivants among us – we'll be visiting a local distillery near Asti to taste some local liquors.

Later, we'll hit the road to the captivating Lake Orta: a tranquil retreat sitting pretty at the bottom of the imposing Monte Mottarone. Then: from one blissful Italian lake to another! Lake Maggiore will be the final stop on today's scenic journey. Stay: Grand Hotel Majestic (or similar) (B)

Today we'll leave dry land behind us and set sail for the Borromean Island: a charming collection of islets located in the western corner of the lake. Get ready to explore idyllic Isola Madre and the pretty harbour of Isola dei Pescatori. We'll also wander around the Baroque Borromeo Palace on Isola Bella with a local guide before we return to shore.

After a light lunch, we'll have some free time to spend at our leisure. Stay: Grand Hotel Majestic (or similar) (B/L)

After bidding a fond farewell to Lake Maggiore we will venture along the shores of stunning Lake Como. Passing lakeside villages draped in opulence, here we'll receive a rare insight into how the rich and famous live. Continuing our journey, we'll stop to taste some local wine before arriving at Sondrio – our home for the night. Stay: Grand Hotel della Posta (or similar) (B)

Today we'll shine the spotlight on one of the most beautiful lakes in Italy: the spectacular Lake Molveno – a swathe of iridescent blue that lies at the foot of the Brenta Dolomites. Then, our Tour Leader will take us on a leisurely stroll around the mountain city of Trento before we settle in for tonight's farewell dinner. Stay: Grand Hotel Trento (or similar) (B/D)

Filled with impressive ruins and romantic hotspots, fair Verona beckons today. After taking in the city highlights on a walking tour with a local guide, we'll board the mini-coach one last time for the journey to our show-stopping finale: the floating city of Venice. (B)

True Indulgence 3 , NSW, Australia, Oct 2024
The Italian Indulgence tour was my 5th tour with Backroads and possibly the most outstanding. A perfect blend of rural countryside, beautiful lakes and historic cities. There were many highlights for me including staying in the beautiful villas in the Florentine and Langhe Hills, Truffle hunting with Mia the dog, spending time in the elegant Portofino ...read more and enjoying the beautiful Italian Lakes namely Maggiore, Como and Molveno. The pace of the tour was ideal, the hotels away from bus loads of tourists and the culture exquisite. I would highly recommend this tour and the guide, Beatrice. Thank you Tracey and the team at Global Journeys for your assistance in making this dream holiday come to fruition. You have always provided first class service. I will always be a Backroads fan.
Great taste of northern Italy   5 , ACT, Australia, Sep 2023
Tour covers great mix of locations across northern Italy with some unique accommodation along the way. Highlights included the time in Lucca (pretty much everyone of our tour would go back there again), watching the truffle hunt near Alba, and cooking lesson in Tuscany. Full tour and major tourist areas were very busy in Italy this September so some ...read more itinerary changes as a result. Probably less ‘back roads’ than other tours I’ve been on, with visits to Florence and Pisa standard ‘in, tour/highlights’, out’.
Fabulous trip!! 11 , QLD, Australia, May 2018
Loved the entire trip, it actually exceeded my expectations. I loved the fact that it was a small group. Great group and we all blended so well. Our tour guide, Margo, was fantastic. Her personality set the standard for our trip - she was infectious with her love for Italy. She made the history of Italy so interesting and I really learnt a lot.

Our ...read more driver was such a lovely young man, always a smile and even suggested a few things that turned out to be so wonderful, he knows his roads! The accommodation and food were of a great standard. I really think the "back roads" are so much more exciting, we really saw amazing country side instead of highways.

Thank you Back Roads, Hannah from Global Journeys for getting us organised in booking our trip and especially Margo and Francesco for treating us like family.
Italian Indulgence   15 , NSW, Australia, May 2016
From the start our tour guide Stephano, was excellent. We had an unfortunate experience leaving Australia and were delayed 25 hours. Arriving in Rome one full day behind our schedule. Making us miss our two private tours we had booked for the preceding day of our departure for Italian Indulgence. Also our bags had not arrived and were still in transit. ...read more Stephano took change and rang several times to British Airways to chase them up. Our bags were finally delivered to us at the end of the second day of our tour. However this did not stop us from enjoying our tour, our meals together and all, the interesting information Stephano shared with us. Our Driver Fabio too was excellent looking after our bags and making sure everything ran smoothly.
A wide variety of experiences 8 , QLD, Australia, Sep 2015
We would highly recommend this tour, a wide variety of experiences and the smaller group was great. The back roads sections away from the big cities was the best part of the tour.
Memorable and enjoyable. Would thoroughly recommend 12 , QLD, Australia, Jul 2015
We found both the tour bus driver and the tour guide to be very helpful, knowledgeable and always willing to assist and go the extra mile. The tour of 'backroads' Italy was fantastic (places, the people, the experience). The people on our tour group also got on really well together which we think made the experience even more memorable and enjoyable. ...read more Would thoroughly recommend.
