The Bay of Islands is rich with pristine beaches, turquoise waters, charming townships and iconic history. Nestled on the East Coast just three hours’ drive from Auckland, this subtropical gem is home to 144 islands and an abundance of marine wildlife – a nature lovers dream. Coupled with its rich history and Maori culture, this region has plentiful experiences to immerse yourself in on and off the water.

With so much to discover, it is no wonder that many New Zealand tours venture north to this wonderland and almost all our North Island itineraries offer guests a two-night stay. This leaves a full day to explore, with either a pre-arranged excursion as part of your tour or on your own. Here are some ways you can while away the hours in this paradise.

Cruise to Cape Brett and the Hole in the Rock

Spot dolphins frolicking alongside you as you glide through turquoise waters that lap at white sand beaches and rugged shorelines. Journey to the famous Hole in the Rock and marvel at this natural wonder as your skipper navigates through the narrow waterway between rocky outcrops. Watch the Cape Brett lighthouse fade into the distance as the sea breeze whisks you past the varied landscapes of the coast – a scenic highlight of the region.

Visit the Waitangi Treaty Grounds

Step back in time as an important moment in the history of New Zealand is brought to life. The Treaty of Waitangi is an agreement signed by representatives of the British Crown and Maori Chiefs in 1840 to enable British settlers and the Maori people to live together under a common set of laws. Walk in the footsteps of those who changed history as you meander through the expansive grounds, explore the Museum of Waitangi, and watch powerful Maori performances.

Discover Ninety Mile Beach and Cape Reinga

Journey along the sands of Ninety Mile Beach, stopping to sift for shellfish or dip your toes in the clear water. Continue to Cape Reinga where the Pacific Ocean and Tasman Sea come together. You can visit the famous lighthouse perched atop the headland. Note the 800 year old Pohutukawa tree where, according to Maori lore, the spirits of deceased Maori leap into the ocean to return to their ancestral homeland of Hawaiki. Stretch your legs with a light hike, or maybe try your hand at sandboarding down the shifting sand dunes.

Journey Back in Time in Russell

Take a trip to see New Zealand’s first European settlement, where the town’s original street plan and names have held strong since their inception in 1843. Once known as a rowdy port and labelled the “Hellhole of the Pacific”, Russell is now a peaceful historic town. Let the long-standing buildings reveal time-old stories as you wander the streets, or venture further to explore nearby Long Beach or climb Maiki Hill.

Take a Scenic Flight over the Bay

See more with a sky-high coastal discovery. Watch the waves breaking below, and drink in the spectacular scenery sprawled beneath you. From Paihia, fly over islands scattered amidst the turquoise waters, including Motukokako Island, home to the famous Hole in the Rock. Choose a flight that captures all the treasures of the bay; perhaps follow the coastline to see the Cape Brett lighthouse and the township of Russell, or possibly journey towards the Kerikeri inlet and over the Black Rocks.
