This Undiscovered Alaska and the Yukon Territory tour features many of the most popular scenic vistas that Alaska and the Yukon Territory have to offer—beginning and ending in Anchorage. Between Anchorage and Tok, enjoy beautiful views of Matanuska Glacier. Between Tok and Whitehorse, behold spectacular vistas of Kluane National Park’s rugged mountains....read more Between Dawson City and Fairbanks, delight in the stunning scenery as you motor over the Top of the World Highway. More magnificent scenery awaits you on your journey aboard the Alaska Railroad between Fairbanks and Denali National Park.

Travel through untamed wilderness and delight in viewing the awe-inspiring scenery via wide windows and the domed-roof car. With its six million acres, Denali National Park & Preserve is home to North America’s highest peak and offers majestic landscapes. Your two nights in Denali give you the opportunity to explore on your own or to take optional outings, such as a helicopter ride over the park or a wilderness tour to seek out grizzly bears, moose, and more. In addition to witnessing breathtaking scenery, this Alaska and Yukon Territory tour offers you a chance to learn about the Klondike Gold Rush. Follow the Trail of ’98 over the same mountains that determined gold seekers traveled in the middle of winter.

Visit Skagway and stroll the wooden sidewalks where thousands of hopeful miners came in 1898. In Dawson City, see where the first gold strike was made and enjoy the ragtime music, can-can girls, and old-fashioned casino just as the prospectors did over a century ago. All of this and more await you on this value-minded tour through Alaska and the Yukon Territory!

Itinerary

Welcome to Anchorage! Your Tour Director is on hand late this afternoon to answer any questions.

As you enter Whittier from North America's longest tunnel, the panoramic view of the ocean, mountains, and glaciers greet you. As the gateway to Prince William Sound, this is where you'll board a cruise to see and marvel at the natural beauty of the fjords and glaciers. Watch for eagles, whales, mountain goats, dolphins, and salmon jumping out of the cold, pristine water!

Travel northeast through Palmer in the Matanuska Valley, a lush farming region where cabbages can grow to weigh more than 70 pounds in the 24-hour daylight! Up over scenic Tahneta Pass with spectacular vistas of Matanuska Glacier. Travel along Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve, the largest park in the United States. The area boasts glaciers larger than the island of Manhattan and is home to nine of the sixteen highest peaks in North America. Overnight in Tok, the “Dog Sled Capital of the World.”

Join the Alaska Highway and follow along the Tetlin National Wildlife Refuge. Skirt the shores of Kluane Lake, once a meeting place for crews constructing the Alaska Highway. Behold spectacular vistas of the rugged mountains of Kluane National Park, home to 19,551-foot-high Mount Logan, Canada's highest peak. The next two nights are in Whitehorse, capital of the Yukon and the territorial headquarters of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

Follow the Trail of ‘98 over the same mountains that thousands of determined gold seekers scaled on foot in the dead of winter while heading for the Klondike. From Fraser, your Tour Director will suggest an optional scenic train trip on the narrow-gauge White Pass & Yukon Railway to Skagway. Otherwise, continue by motorcoach to Skagway. Stroll the wooden sidewalks past charming false-front buildings and colorful saloons.

Please Note: Operation of the White Pass & Yukon Railway to Skagway is subject to seasonal conditions.

Head northwest through the town of Carmacks, once an important supply station for gold seekers on their way to the Klondike. Stop at the Five Finger Rapids, a major obstacle to the hordes of fortune seekers that passed this way. Reach Dawson City, the center of excitement after the first gold strike in the Klondike in 1896, which led to the world's largest gold rush. Tonight, enjoy the high-flying entertainment of Dimond Tooth Gertie's Saloon, featuring ragtime music, can-can girls, and an old-fashioned casino.

Highlights on your morning sightseeing tour include Bonanza Creek, site of Claim #1, where the first gold strike was made; and a presentation by Parks Canada regarding the Gold Rush Era. Enjoy a photo opportunity at the SS Keno, the last sternwheeler to run between Dawson and Whitehorse. The rest of your day is free to soak up the exciting history of this Gold Rush town at your own pace. Perhaps a return to Diamond Tooth Gertie's Saloon is in order!

A full day and well worth it, as the scenery is magnificent. Have your camera ready for photo opportunities at Dawson overlook and Top of the World Highway, where the motorcoach will re-enter Alaska, and visit one of the last surviving gold rush towns in Alaska before heading west on the Alaska Highway to Fairbanks.

Morning sightseeing features highlights of Alaska's second-largest city and a visit to the Trans-Alaska Pipeline. Then try striking it rich gold panning with a local provider.

This afternoon, board the Sternwheeler Riverboat Discovery III for a leisurely cruise on the Chena River. You will see a bush floatplane take off alongside the boat, see the home and kennels of the late four-time Iditarod winner, Susan Butcher, and see her champion sled dogs in action. Then be immersed into the ancient Athabascan Indian culture when Alaskan Native Guides take you on a tour of the Chena Indian Village. This evening, catch a local tradition with an optional salmon bake dinner.

Board the world-famous Alaska Railroad for a memorable journey through untamed wilderness. Sit back in comfort and enjoy spectacular scenery through wide windows. Be sure to take advantage of the domed-roof car. The ride ends in Denali National Park & Preserve. North America's highest peak, 20,310-foot Denali, formerly known as Mount McKinley, dominates the park's six million acres of glacial streams, river valleys, and multi-hued tundra. After a short orientation tour of Denali, the afternoon is free to explore on your own.

A free day for independent activities. A hike along one of the many wilderness trails might be good fun. Take advantage of several exciting optional outings, including a wildlife tour to seek out grizzly bears, caribou, moose, and Dall sheep; a raft trip down the Nenana River; a sled-dog kennel tour, or an exhilarating flightseeing excursion over the park. Your Tour Director will have plenty of suggestions.

Relish one last look at the outstanding scenery and wildlife of Denali before traveling south toward Anchorage and the tour hotel for guests extending their stay in Alaska. For guests with homebound flights, the trip ends at Anchorage International Airport. With possible delays for weather, we strongly suggest that guests do not book flights prior to 5 pm.

Stunning Scenery! 5 , QLD, Australia, May 2019
We followed our Canadian and Alaska tour with a Yukon tour. The sights of the Yukon and the towns on the Gold Rush run, were amazing. the people were so friendly. The land of the midnight sun takes a bit of getting used to, but most hotels have blockout curtains. Again cannot say which tour was the best, they both have something to offer. Again, breakfast ...read more should be offered by Cosmos. Overall good value.
Once in a lifetime trip 14 , NSW, Australia, Aug 2017
The highlights of our trip included the 200 Km boat trip from Whittier to Valdez on an 83 foot catamaran and whilst we had winds up to 60 km per hour the Captain adjusted the boat speed and it was a very smooth ride and there were no signs of sea sickness on the boat.

Other highlights included the optional White Pass railway trip which is a must ...read more do, this Cosmos trip is the only trip that does this. The train trip from Fairbanks to Denali National Park was in a glass top train with an outside viewing position available for photographs was also very good. Hotels are 2 to 3 stars and the reason for this is this trip goes into remote areas that have limited hotels available. Getting to Anchorage the best way is to fly to Hawaii then overnight with Alaskan Airlines from Honolulu to Anchorage.
Loved this tour, we really got to see the real Alaska 1 , QLD, Australia, Jul 2015
Loved this tour, we really got to see the real Alaska. It was very long days on the coach, so tiring but we signed up for that as Alaska is so large it does take a lot of driving to see it. The accommodation was better than we expected in the more remote places but just wish that the hotels would let the tour coaches in a little earlier & then we could ...read more have had some earlier nights to be ready for the next days travel. Tour guide Jason was excellent & so was Adam our coach driver. Both went above & beyond to make the tour such a wonderful time.
Less than excellent due to pace and no breakfast included 4 , Australia, Sep 2014
Most accommodation in this remote part of North America is only 2 to 3 stars but I was happy with our accommodation in comparison to others nearby in same towns. All coaches in North America have only one door which is unlike Europe where coaches have two doors, which makes entry and exit quicker. So with only one door, all it takes is one bumbling ...read more unorganised person to hold up everyone on the coach and this happened too often, with one particular person to blame. Tour Guide could not have been better, knowledgeable and a good speaker. The pace is very tiring as distances are great sometimes necessitating 12 and 13 hour drives in a day. But it was necessary to cover everything. I would like to have seen breakfasts included. Optional excursions included evening meals or entertainment and these were fine with me. The overall rating was less than excellent only because of the pace and no breakfast included. I would like to have seen a slightly longer tour which would lessen the stress but it is a huge land and there may be no intermediate stops suitable and it would have added to cost. All in all quite an experience and I was surprised to see most fellow passengers were Australian and two from NZ. I have always been happy with the service provided by staff at Global Journeys.
Very good tour overall 4 , Australia, Sep 2013
Booking with Global Journeys was smooth and easy. Helpful assistance and feedback. Good inside industry knowledge of Globus tours and the various booking mechanisms. Agent (Yvonne Brooks) responded to all emails and phone calls. This was our first Cosmos bus tour, although we had a Globus tour in the previous year, and we do travel a fair bit, mostly ...read more independently, and making our own plans and own bookings. Very good overall. Bus good. Driver excellent, a mature local, with a good balanced sense of courtesy, humour and travel knowledge, so that he could make a very good contribution. Guide very good, experienced, balanced, mature and worldly wise, patient, and well organised. Good selection choice by Globus (Cosmos). Able to handle unforeseen situations, and mildly pesky traveller customers, with good manners and sense, offering suggestions rather than giving orders. Our guide gave extensive local knowledge over the PA whilst travelling along, and in an excellent tone and slightly whimsical approach, maintaining the fun atmosphere necessary for good coach travel. The tour plan of towns and sights was very good in type and in time sequence. The tour schedule was a it fast, but most tours of this type are fast to squeeze in all the sights. The tour went to most of the good sights and places to see, and offered most of the good optional excursions which were relevant to the place or area. We saw all the places and sights that more expensive tours went to. Good value for money. This tour had no breakfasts included. This is very important. Most travellers will pay the extra for an included breakfast as it is just so convenient and useful to discuss yesterdays travel and today's prospects. This was the item most discussed by our bus tour. Offered by Cosmos in Europe but not in North America apparently. Most of our fellow bus travellers were happy with our tour. Impressed. We would travel again with Cosmos or Globus. We would recommend both Globus and Global Journeys.
Took in a lot more than we might have on our own 2 , Australia, May 2013
We benefited from the tour escort and driver's local experience and managed to take in a lot more than we might have on our own. Motels in Alaska can be low in the star count so it is best to be prepared for this.
